Don’t we want more likes and stuff?
“Yeah, but don’t we want more likes and stuff?” Frank says, bewildered.
I let a brief silence fall and then resolutely say NO. Then another silence, but now to give him a chance to respond.
“What is your number 1 goal?” I ask, when a response to my first reaction fails to materialize.
“Uhhmm… getting orders?” Frank says hesitantly, as if he doesn’t know perfectly well. “Exactly! Focus on revenue! So if you have all these social media links to Facebook, Insta, and whatever else at the top of your website, it distracts from that number 1 goal!”
Silence again. “Your website is leaking like a sieve,” I say, and I can almost hear the pennies dropping as I notice him processing something internally.
“You use social media at the beginning, where you refer (potential) guests to your website, not the other way around. And likes are nice, and of course they help your posts get viewed more often and might bring more traffic to your website, but they should never be a goal in themselves….”
“Sooo, while we’re talking about your website anyway, you need to rip out those links to all those suppliers too,” I say ruthlessly.
“What? Why that too? Isn’t it great if guests can read about where the products come from?” Frank then says indignantly.
“Sure, you can tell them all about it, but no link and less advertising for your supplier. Turn it into a beautiful story, emphasizing your contribution and the brilliant things you do with that piece of meat from Butcher BlaBlaBla.”
“Unless you’re being sponsored by them, that’s a different story”… silence again, which says enough this time.
“Does Butcher BlaBlaBla also have a link on their website to your page?” No.
Frank sees the light and suddenly gets a burst of energy. “Oooww, yeah of course. Yeah, makes sense actually! I haven’t looked at it that way before… it’s completely clear to me!”
I don’t need to say anything more. The website needs an overhaul. Everything set up towards the number 1 goal and eliminating outgoing links as much as possible.
It’s the tail end of our conversation and we’ve already talked about a hundred other things and Frank is feeling a bit dizzy. Time to say goodbye so he can let it all sink in and get to work, but not before I ask him one last question: “Frank, do you mind if I use our conversation for my article next week?” “Of course honey, anytime.” Great.
